Journeys with ‘The Waste Land’

"Uwe Wittwer, 'Cracking Glass (after Jarman)' (2014). Unique inkjet prints, 24 parts, 45 × 75 cm each. — In preparing his 2015 exhibition 'The King's Tear', Uwe Wittwer was inspired by both Derek Jarman and T.S. Eliot to create a major new work, 'Cracking Glass (after Jarman)', a 28-part inkjet work in which each element depicts a still from Jarman’s film ‘The Last of England’ (1987), interwoven with handwritten texts from Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’ (1922). Together these elements suggest a new interconnected whole but suggest fractured alternative versions of both film and poem.
— Wittwer's work will be included in a new exhibition, 'Journeys with ‘The Waste Land’', opening at the Herbert Art Museum and Art Gallery on 15 September. This exhibition explores the contemporary significance of T.S. Eliot’s seminal poem and the way it has resonated with artists over the years, and has been led by independent curator, Michael Tooby, organised by the Mead Gallery and the Herbert Art Gallery in association with Coventry Cathedral, in collaboration with Turner Contemporary in Margate. — For further information please visit www.theherbert.org"
